I'm sure everyone has heard the 'new' buzzword going around. However, most people don't know that this word is from old science fiction. I suggest reading "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. Now, as for the concept of the new proposed Metaverse, this is taking an existing concept, called the "Multiverse," and just spinning it in to the next big thing. It is clear that virtual worlds, with and without the use of VR headsets, will replace social media as we know it. Just like online video, like YouTube, is starting to replace television.
You don't have to wait for Facebook..I mean Meta.. to release their vision of this new platform, Horizons, in order to see it. Like I mentioned earlier, this is all from an existing concept. Ever hear of Second Life? How about Sansar, VR Chat, or IMVU? The list goes on and on. Even Fortnite is focusing more on the Multiverse.
I was a Second Life landowner for a couple years and developed educational experiences for a local university that I worked for. Later, our team decided to use propriety servers with custom built simulations. However, that was all a long time ago.
I now enjoy Sansar the most and have created some experiences on that platform. I would suggest you try it out. It is free. If you would like to experience it in VR, I suggest you get the Sansar app through Steam since it supports different devices.
